Dr Matt O'Connor
I am a registered Clinical Psychologist, having completed the Doctor of Psychology (Clinical) at Griffith University, Brisbane and am a board-approved supervisor. I am currently working in my own private practice - ConnectEd Counselling and Consultancy. I have worked with a very diverse range of people and settings including schools, acute mental health units, residential care for young people, veterans and their families, the Queensland Police and community settings.
I have balanced my individual clinical work with young people, parents and communities, with a focus on broader systems that support the mental health and wellbeing of all young people, as well as research outputs on service use, therapeutic approaches and outcome assessment. My academic work has led to a number of journal articles, reports and presentations, relating to school counselling use, policies and procedures and outdoor education. My research work also includes the development of the Mental Health Literacy Scale (MHLS), which has received significant international attention, having been cited over 1000 times and translated into over 45 languages.
I have a long history of volunteering and working with young people, having been the youngest ever director of ReachOut.com (formerly Inspire Foundation). I am an engaging and well-regarded presenter, facilitator and educator with diverse experience in providing psychoeducation and skills-based presentations and workshops to health professionals, the general public and young people. I have delivered several hundred presentations around Australia to corporate organisations (e.g. Suncorp, University of Queensland, Griffith University), not-for-profits (e.g. TEDx, Reachout.com, Amnesty International, Batyr), conferences (e.g. International Conference on Youth Mental Health, International Mental Health Conference, Australian Psychologists and Counsellors in Schools Conference), health practitioners, schools and the general public.
My three main areas of interest are my work as a psychologist, as a presenter and as an academic. If I may be able to offer my services across these areas, please get in touch
